Don’t be fooled by Will Ferrel’s apparition.. it’s not a comedy!

Stranger than Fiction (2006)

At first, looking at Will Ferrel and the title, I really thought it was a comedy.
But I set my expectation, it will not be so slapstick because there are Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman in it.

The movie also started with a promise to be a comedy.
A narration about a man’s life, Harold Crick (Will Ferrel), a taxman whose life is very repetitive day by day.
How he calculates how many strokes when brushing his teeth.
How many steps he must take to catch the bus.
How good he is at math.

And the comedy essence is getting stronger when Harold suddenly could hear the narration about his life, and he starts to react in a funny way… until the narration mentioned something about his imminent death.

The comedy aura’s gone now, becoming a mystery, since Harold must find answer why he can hear the voice, whose voice it is, and about his death.
This event also makes some changes to Harold’s life.
He learns to play guitar, and lets himself into relationship with someone.

Harold’s story is slowly converging with another story about a writer, who has writer’s block, with her assistant; plus some scenes about a boy who got a bike and a woman who finds a job. All the way to the ending.

From the movie critics’ point of view, this movie must have a good rating.
The acting is great, the characters are strong, the storyline is so innovative.

But from my rating (and I am not fan of drama movie), I think this movie is so so.
Definitely not bad, since you will sit and enjoy the movie ’til the end.
But not that good, so that you will watch it again soon.

For Will Ferrel, it reminds me when I saw Jim Carrey in “Truman Show”.
Doing serious acting in a funny-kind-but-strange movie.
