[reflection] The Power of Concept

(inspired by a ‘spiritual’ discussion with a colleague)

There was a time when successful persons in society were determined by their strength.
That era ended when human invented machine.
Now strength become something you could easily have.

There was a time when successful persons in society were determined by your intellectual and skill.
But that era ended when human invented industrialisation (breaking down project to job, and job to task) and the rise of academic institution.
Now intellectual and skill can be learned.

There was a time when successful persons in society were determined by information you knew.
But that era just ended when human invented internet and communication technology.
Information now is everywhere.

Now.. new era will begin.
The power will be determined by the ability to perceive or to form a concept
People with strong conceptual mind will rule.
Good concept will put the same skill, the same knowledge, the same information into a different result.

Technology wise, IPOD is just a box with hard-disk and MP3 player (plus i-Tune hehehe).
So many companies are capable to come with that idea.
Long before IPOD was released, ACER had introduced a small device that could record voice, play mp3, and become a flash disk…. (what IPOD NANO is all about).
But Steve Jobs cleverly positioned IPOD as a new gadget, a trend, a new generation of walkman (and why doesn’t Sony think abou this?).

Another example.
As long as Coca Cola is perceived as cola drink, it will stay in the same small pool, shared with Pepsi.
But when it is perceived as regular drink, it direcly moves to the huge ocean, competing with tea, coffee, and water.

——

So.. spend time to reflect.
Always try to challenge your mind.
You will be surprised how the world is so different when you have new perception, new paradigm or new view on things in your life.

Who knows future leaders will come from major that will teach you conceptual things like arts, philosophy, psychology.. (advice to students who are considering what major to take hehehee).

When half of a glass is filled with water…
Some people will say : ‘it’s half empty’…. (pessimist)
Some people will say : ‘it’s half full’…. (optimist)
But…….
….we can also say : ‘the glass is twice as large as it should be’ … hehehe…
