“Good health is about being able to fully enjoy the time we do have. It is about being as functional as possible throughout our entire lives and avoiding crippling, painful and lengthy battles with disease. There are many better ways to die, and to live.” T. Colin Campbell, PhD; The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-Term Health

The China Study

The China Study

According to T. Colin Campbell, “…people who ate the most animal-based foods got the most chronic disease … People who ate the most plant-based foods were the healthiest and tended to avoid chronic disease. These results could not be ignored.”

My dh and I recently are currently transitioning to eat a whole-foods/plant-based diet after we reading the first couple chapters of this book, but I’m not trying to convert to become a strict vegan.

Here are some quotes from the book I’m reading that I wanted to share:
Animal protein consumtion by me was associated with increasing of “bad” blood cholesterol whereas plant protein consumption was associated with decreasing levels of this same cholesterol. [p. 80]

…the idea of giving up virtually all meat products – including beef, chicken, fish, cheese, milk & eggs – seems impossible. you might as well ask Americans to stop breathing. The whole idea seems strange, fanatical or fantastic. This is the biggest obstacle to the adoption of a plant-based diet: most people who hear about it don’t seriously consider it, despite the truly impressive health benefits. If you are one of these people – if you are curious abouut these findings but know in your heart that you will never be able to give up meat – then I know that no amount of talk will ever convince you to change your mind. You have to try it. [p. 244]

The bottom line is that you can eat plant-based diet with great pleasure and satisfaction. But making the transition is a challenge. There are psychological barriers and practical ones. It takes time and effort. [p. 246]

It’s completely eye opening! I recommend reading the book.

Additional comment (e2rd_san) :

This book simply shows that animal-based protein is increasing the risk of getting cancer. Of course, the book is equipped with solid statistics to prove it. And the logic behind this.

But this one particular experiment can sum it all :

  • One group of mouse is given plant-based nutrition, and the other one is given animal-based nutrition.
  • At certain age, all mice are exposed to carcinogen material.
  • Plan-based group = 100% live, animal-based group = 100% died (pretty convincing right!)
