My english teacher showed me this poem 15 years ago. Make me thinking what do I want to do when I am old woman. I’m amazed to see it again in one of the antique shops in York<\/a>, hanging in the wall. Here is the full poem:<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple<\/span><\/span>
With a red<\/span> hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.<\/span>
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves<\/span>
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.<\/span>
\nI shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired<\/span>
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells<\/span>
And run my stick along the public railings<\/span>
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.<\/span>
\nI shall go out in my slippers in the rain<\/span>
And pick the flowers in other people’s gardens<\/span>
And learn to spit.<\/span>

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat<\/span>
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go<\/span>
Or only bread and pickle for a week<\/span>
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.<\/span>But now we must have clothes that keep us dry<\/span>
\nAnd pay our rent and not swear in the street<\/span>
\nAnd set a good example for the children.<\/span>
\nWe must have friends to dinner and read the papers.<\/span><\/p>\n

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?<\/span>
\nSo people who know me are not too shocked and surprised<\/span>
\nWhen suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
